Romney gives Huckabee and Frank dissimilar treatment for similar comments

Then-GOP presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney go at it.Mitt Romney's people are fighting back against Barney Frank and the Democratic National Committee for their comments disparaging the vice presidential contender's consistency on the issues.

Though Mike Huckabee's similar comments are getting the kid-glove treatment from Team Romney.

"The primaries are over," said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom told Jonathan Martin when asked for comment about his statements. "Now, the task of all Republicans is on uniting the party to help elect John McCain, not on sowing division."

Martin wisely observes the Romney camp is "hoping to burnish their "team player" credentials by not responding in kind, with the idea being to portray Huckabee as the one who is looking out for his own interests."

Are you trying to stir up more trouble?

I saw the whole video that is posted on the FOXNEWS website. Did the Times site deliberately leave out the introductory part of the interview where he was misquoted and was trying to clear things up? Looks like they will do anything to help their man, Obama win by once again only reporting parts of interviews they think might cause trouble for the GOP. You can fall for their tactics if you want to; but that only helps Obama.

Granny - the fat lady sang, already!

Huck is nothing more than a bitter has-been loser. Look at the way your guy is acting! Do you see any of the other former candidates sowing division in the party?

Nada. They are all on board and working for McCain.

Poor Huckabee. He can't control his mouth. His jealousy and contempt for Romney is on display and it ain't too pretty!

Don't you find it somewhat troublesome that the man who wanted to lead the entire nation cannot be bothered with loyalty, service, or helping his party win the nomination? It's very clear he wants McCain to lose because he has some wild notion that he can run again. Sorry, Huck. You won the south by only 1% over Romney and you failed miserably in EVERY other region. You were soundly rejected by the majority of voters.

Please, have some dignity and move on.

Romney's out campaigning for VP

while Huckabee has moved on with his life and is extremely busy working for his living just like the rest of us. Don't fault him for doing his best to clear thing up when he is misquoted. He said during the interview that he will be supporting McCain no matter who he chooses as VP. He was merely trying to clarify why some of his supporters can't trust Mitt. Watch the whole interview posted on FOXNEWS' website.

Team Willard Full Lies

Team Willard is nothing but a bunch of con artist, for one solid week these thugs were out there trying to portray every American that doesn't support Romney as bigot to gain a sympathy vote. Well it did work and with good reason too, because everybody know that Romney & his pack of whores will do or say anything for him as long as the check clears. These people are the shadiest bunch of hypocrites the US politic system has ever seen.

08/14/08 4:59 pm

Huckaliar

I just watched the FOX video and heard Huckabee say he would do all he could to help John McCain win the nomination....ha. I haven't seen Huckabee out there busting his can stumping for McCain....I have seen Romney out there busting his can on his own expenses to help McCain get nominated. Those who can't trust Romney at this point are severly dillusional. If Romney had other ambitions for politics in the future he would hope McCain would lose in 2008 so he could run in 2012.

08/14/08 5:03 pm

Losers

Huck says people don't like Romney for his inconsistencies....What inconsistencies? I was sceptical of Romney also in the primaries but decided to do a little of my own research. I found that Romney flipped not flip-flopped on two issues: Gun Control and Abortion. The gun control flip was an issue that Mitt took to allow a 6 day clearance and background check prior to receiving and purchasing firearms (I don't want some hot head getting immediate clearance for firearms to do damage for payback). The second flip was abortion, and it was a flip in the right direction...pro life. So please explain to me the inconsistencies?

I've realized that the uneducated and bigotted religionists are those that take issue with Romney. I admit, I understand now why so many take issue with Romney. You can't bribe him because he already has money and has shown it means little to him by donating his olympic chairman money and governor of Massachusetts money to charitable causes and clearing his primary debt. You can't discredit him, he is educated and has proven himself in all aspects (business, olympics, and politics). You can't blackmail him because he is a man of integrity and has nothing to hide. He's exactly what Washington needs and a very hard pill to swallow for those that can't phase him. So, someone please give me a legitimate reason not to pick this man besides, "I don't trust him." Tell me that after you've met the man.

I Don't Trust Con Artist

Hey Jacob W.,

I have met slick Willy, and I tell you straight up buddy I would trust a person who broken into my home and robbed me clean over Willard any day.

08/14/08 6:36 pm

Say YES to Huckabee

There is a lot of bigotry out there coming from Romney supporters and the media. They don't like Governor Huckabee because he once was a "pastor". They are afraid that Huckabee is trying to turn this country into a theocracy. There are a lot of MISQUOTES coming from the Romney supporter as well about what Huckabee said. They are turning their bigotry around to make it appear that Huckabee is the bigot. Governor Huckabee NEVER said anything about being against Romney for his religion. Watch the fox video. He also shows how he is a supporter of two public servants who are mormon. Huckabee has no problem with supporting mormons. He looks at the issues the person stands for. Governor Huckabee will be supporting McCain if Romney is VP.

I won't be supporting McCain if Romney is VP because Romney has proved to be a flip flopper on the most important issues. Go to http://www.trueromney.com and see for yourself.

08/14/08 6:44 pm

Huckabee scorned by liberal media!!!

Huckabee has done ALL McCain has asked him do do to offer his support. He has appeared at many state conventions where he received adulation from excited crowds, one that I attended in NC. He has hosted many fundraisers, one just last week in Missouri that brought over 1100 people. It is the McCain camp who has LIMITED what Huckabee has done for them and I can certainly see that McCain wouldn't want to stand on a stage next to Huckabee so we could compare what we got with what we could have had...Romney will probably be the perfect vp for McCain, a weak minded flip flopper who will have no problem changing his platform to conform with the man who he said was not a conservative. Even though ALL the independent polls taken show that Huckabee is the clear favorite with the American people and would help McCain's ticket most, it is NEVER reported by the media, even Fox is pushing Romney on the public. This is going to backfire bigtime next election. The American people are going to rebel against media influencing our elections. I no longer wish for Huckabee to be on McCain's ticket, and I believe a McCain/Romney ticket is a losing ticket. Huckabee is much better off doing tv and radio over the next few years where he can get his message out there without distortion and bias......

08/14/08 6:44 pm

Does anyone really support Huck?

At this point, and after all of the ridiculous things Huckabee has said and done (including this latest thing- dividing the party at a crucial time), can anyone really honestly like this guy? I'm convinced that Huckabee supporteres are good people without only part of the story.

08/14/08 7:18 pm

Huckabee is supporting McCain!

Sir, perhaps you haven’t seen it, but Huckabee has been doing everything he can to help McCain.

He has endorsed McCain on his PAC. He has stumped for him in Arkansas. Whenever he is on TV, and the subject is the election, he always tries to make McCain look good. He has a video circulating on the internet voicing his support of McCain, and calling his supporters to help us republicans win in November.

And he would do much more if he was given the opportunity.

McCain may be leaning on Romney’s support more than on Huckabee’s, but that doesn’t make Huckabee’s support any weaker.

Thanks.

08/14/08 8:33 pm

Earth to Huck!

Does Huck realize he is the ONLY Republican taking pot shots at another republican right now?! With all the division going on on the other side right now, we finally have a chance to show the country we are the party that can rise above selfish politicking, and lead the country. Is Huck that small minded? Use your fifteen minutes of fame for something productive Huck...

08/14/08 8:36 pm

I support him, and according

I support him, and according to SurveyUSA polls, quite a few other people would support him for VP too. Let me explain.

Survey USA took a series of polls to determine the VP candidate (out of Huckabee, Lieberman, Pawlenty, and Romney) who would help John McCain the most.

They took polls in PA, NM, VA, CA, OH, IA, KS, WI, NE, OR, NY, MA, MN, AL, KY, and MO. Of these, PA, NM, VA, OH, IA, OR, MN, and MO are generally considered to be possible battleground states in November.

In almost every case, Governor Mike Huckabee did best. He even had a slight lead in Massachusetts where Romney was once Governor!

Rasmussen recently took a similar poll. They asked those polled whether they had, in general, a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the following VP candidates: Crist, Huckabee, Jindal, Lieberman, Palin, and Romney.

Huckabee had the highest favorability and net favorability rating. The net was +8% compared to -6% for Romney.

To Jacob W.: Sir, I think

To Jacob W.:

Sir, I think there are a few you missed.

To start, how about Governor Romney's position on a marriage amendment?

From the Left:

In 2002, before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declared same-sex marriage protected by the Constitution, Romney denounced as "too extreme" the effort by pro-family groups to enact a preemptive state Marriage Protection Amendment prohibiting homosexual marriage, civil unions and same-sex public employee benefits.
- Boston Phoenix, May 14-20, 2004

From the Right:

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough: "Do you support a national constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage?"

Governor Romney: "Boy, I sure do. You know, that's a topic that's really, I think, very important to the country because marriage is not just about adults. Marriage is about the development and nurturing of kids, and in my view, the development of a child is enhanced by having a mom and dad. And so, I think it's very important that we have a national standard because marriage is a status. You get married in one place and then you move to another, you're still married at least in the eyes of the community and the children and the benefits may not follow you, but ultimately we're going to have one standard of marriage in this country and that standard ought to be one man and one woman."
- MSNBC's "Morning Joe" September 17, 2007

What about ENDA?

"We have discussed a number of important issues such as the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which I have agreed to co-sponsor, and if possible broaden to include housing and credit, and a bill to create a federal panel to find ways to reduce gay and lesbian youth suicide, which I also support. One issue I want to clarify concerns [grammar in context] President Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation's military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share…"
- Governor Romney letter to Log Cabin Republicans, October 6, 1994 Read the letter

From the Right:

Lopez: "And what about the 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Republicans where you indicated you would support the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and seemed open to changing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military? Are those your positions today?

Gov. Romney: "No. I don't see the need for new or special legislation. My experience over the past several years as governor has convinced me that ENDA would be an overly broad law that would open a litigation floodgate and unfairly penalize employers at the hands of activist judges...As for military policy and the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, I trust the counsel of those in uniform who have set these policies over a dozen years ago. I agree with President Bush's decision to maintain this policy and I would do the same."
- Interview with National Review, December 14, 2006 Read the interview

Thanks.

I am so ashamed of the media

I am so ashamed of the media in this country-their lies and bias. I will never again believe what they say. We might as well be living in a Communist country. Boo to you, very bad form! If you can't print or state the complete truth, then go away!

McCAIN - ROMNEY

McCAIN & ROMNEY: This is the team - and the only one on either side of the aisle -with the expertise and experience to hit on all cylinders: National Security, Economy, Health Care, Governance, and Family Values. Together, they bring it all to the table. Both are fully vetted, Romney's age is just right -not too young or too old to match McCain, he is seriously smart -- the only candidate recognized with global economy credentials in the entire race, and he is a believable candidate for the position a heartbeat away from the Presidency. They are alike, yet different; they both convey competence and leadership; and, yes, Romney helps a McCain presidency “look” better.

Finally, Romney delivers Michigan and strengthens McCain in other key western states. As for the anti-Mormon Evangelicals who still refuse to believe Mormons are Christians, surveys showed that by the end of the primary season, Romney was carrying as many Evangelical votes as Huckabee. There’s unquestionably a narrow strata of anti-Mormon Evangelicals but they don’t want McCain either, surely won't vote for Obama, and will likely stay home. The majority of Evangelicals are driven by critical core values that will send them to the polls, if only to ensure that the next two Supreme Court Justices are not rabid pro-abortionists. Evangelicals understand that there's a lot at stake that will matter long after the next President or Vice President have come and gone.

Further, the hits Romney took from the liberal media while a primary candidate would now be emerging in a very different context and have much less punch. How can, say, a Chris Matthews, criticize Romney for “flip-flopping” after Matthew’s guy, Obama, continues to flip by the day? Besides, Newsweek has now determined – once Obama started doing it – that flip-flopping is good.

And given Obama’s religious baggage (just why did he stay in that church for 20 years?), how do the Dems go after Romney on religion? (Interesting factoid: both Romney and Obama have polygamist ancestors!) In fact, McCain could use the occasion of selecting Romney as his running mate to take an aggressive and public stand against religious bigotry of any kind.

And then there’s the economy: Romney’s got bona fides. You can’t refute his experience nor his success in the global economy. Obama has none. Zero. As Romney has said, Obama has ever run a thing much less a country. At least McCain brings to the White House his major management experience in the military as well as decades of experience with major issues affecting this country. As the Obama campaign has learned, going after McCain on his military experience only begs the question: Well, what has Obama done? Going after Romney on his economic experience will beg a similar question: What has Obama ever done to merit voters' confidence in his grasp of global economic issues?

America is feeling desperate for leaders who can rebuild this nation’s economic stability; a President who made his money writing books just doesn’t instill confidence in me. I want the guy who turned Office Depot into a global giant and managed to relight the torch of a dying Olympics. Give us McCain & Romney. Give America its future.

08/15/08 1:10 am

Way to try to divide the

Way to try to divide the GOP, Huckabee. The differences between you and Romney are so clear. While Romney is working hard to unify the party, you're creating wedges. What a loser! Can someone shut this guy up?!

08/15/08 2:04 am

I'm a Mormon and I LOVE

I'm a Mormon and I LOVE evangelicals. We need more of em in this country.

That being said, Romney would be the best pick for Veep, he's the only Veep candidate that can bring in swing states (Michigan, Colorado, Nevada, possibly Ohio), NOBODY else can do this. He has movie star good looks, perfect family, fully vetted (the only thing the media can do is try and bash his faith and try and get evangelicals flustered over it), great economic bona fides.

It HAS to be Romney!

McCain/Romney 08!

08/15/08 11:56 am

Like I Said the Uneducated

Mark P. would really trust someone who robbed him before he trusted Romney? Lord have mercy on these poor confused souls!

08/15/08 3:21 pm

Huck gave us liberal McCain and may give us liberal Ridge as #2.

You know the funny thing is that a few weeks ago, it was looking like Romney might be the VP but then Huck and his army of bigots went to work. They demand, they threaten, they spread lies and just like in the primary they seemingly succeed in generating hatred towards the most educated, graceful, successful, scandal-free man running for President this cycle.

That division in the primary gave us John McCain. The divorced, self-proclaimed bad boy womanizer who finished at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, A man known for his hot temper and foul language whose current wife has made a fortune off of beer distribution. This is a guy who would appear to be everything Huck's legions of "values voters" despise but yet because of them, he is the nominee instead of the very decent, successful and moral Mitt Romney.

Now they are back in action to stop a Romney Vice-Presidency and the irony is the guy looking like he's next in line is none other than pro-abortion Tom Ridge.

It would serve them right to get the McCain/Ridge pair. Then who will they vote for? Obama? I don't think so. They'll be forced to vote for a Republican team that is one of the most hostile in recent history to all their sacred causes. Remember McCain called their heros Falwell and Robertson "agents of intolerence".

To all the Huckabee fans, please wake up because your jokester preacher ain't gonna get the VP nod and if it isn't Romney, it may be Ridge or Libermann or worse. You are only hurting yourself.
